Sketches, Scents, and Stories: My Creative Day in Aix-en-Provence
Aix-en-Provence doesn’t rush you, instead, it invites you to slow down and notice everything. The breeze, the light, and the way bread smells when you walk by a bakery. I wore jeans instead of shorts this morning, my lesson learned from yesterday’s surprise cool wind, and our host mom Christine dropped us halfway to school before we walked the rest, sleepy but excited. At school, we drew colorful landscapes and practiced capturing quick details, specifically important elements such as the lights and darks of an image. At one point, I used my non-dominant hand to sketch a boat and trees, and the result came out more expressive and free than expected. Later, during a creative writing lesson at a café, I wrote about the warmth of the sun on my arms mixed with the gusts of wind that almost stole my paper, and the parade of unique people passing by. It felt calm, creative, and very French. The day ended with yoga and shopping with friends, relaxing and adventurous.
Travel Tip: Bring layers! Mornings are sometimes chilly even in the summer. Also, don’t be afraid to draw, write, or take pictures in public, as Aix is the perfect place to feel inspired.
